Benefits of Microneedling for a Brighter, Refreshed Complexion

Microneedling is a revolutionary procedure designed to provide you with a rejuvenated and refreshed appearance. Since its invention, it’s made waves in the world of skincare because microneedling can deliver impressive results with relatively no downtime, making it not only effective but convenient.

At ALC Medspa, we offer microneedling to clients with all sorts of skin types to help them achieve the very best results possible. So let’s dive into the amazing benefits of microneedling and how this treatment can help you achieve a brighter, more refreshed complexion.

What Is Microneedling?

You might have heard of it before, but exactly what is microneedling? Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure designed to stimulate collagen production within your skin, making your skin plumper, healthier, and stronger.

Microneedling works by using a device consisting of fine needles which create small wounds in the skin. These small wounds signal your body to begin its healing process, which involves generating new collagen and elastin: two proteins critical for skin health.

The idea of creating several tiny wounds in the skin might sound intimidating, but microneedling punctures only the top layers of the skin, which is why it’s a comfortable procedure able to deliver impressive results.

How Microneedling Works

By understanding how microneedling works, you can better comprehend its benefits. Microneedling stimulates the wound-healing process of your body, which means your skin goes through three phases:

  • Inflammation
  • Protein production
  • Remodeling

During the inflammation period, your immune system is busy cleaning the wound and removing debris (like scar tissue). During the protein production process, your skin starts generating new collagen and elastin proteins. Then, there’s the final remodeling phase, where the wounded site is replaced by new tissues and skin cells.

Microneedling Benefits

Reducing Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Since microneedling increases collagen production, it helps fill in fine lines and wrinkles, making your skin plumper and more youthful-looking.

Minimizing Pore Sizes

Collagen production caused by microneedling also results in skin tightening, which can make your pores appear smaller.

Reducing the Appearance of Stretch Marks

Microneedling breaks up scar tissue around stretch marks while stimulating new collagen growth, which helps smooth out your skin.

Addressing Sun Damage and Hyperpigmentation

Microneedling is a popular choice for repairing sun damage, particularly sun spots and hyperpigmentation. Microneedling helps shed the top layer of the skin so your skin cells can resurface and rejuvenate.

Enhanced Product Absorption

Microneedling creates direct channels through the skin so your skin is able to absorb nutrient-dense products better. Any serums and creams are able to penetrate more deeply, which makes them more effective.

Microneedling for Acne Scars

Microneedling for acne scars is one of the most effective treatments currently available. When your skin doesn’t produce enough collagen in response to inflammation from acne, you develop indented acne scars or atrophic scars. Without enough collagen, the skin pulls inward, which creates indentations.

By stimulating collagen and elastin production in areas of indented scarring, microneedling helps your body fill in the indented areas, which not only reduces their appearance but also improves the skin’s texture.

If you have raised acne scars, then microneedling can break up that scar tissue and help your skin remodel itself into a smoother and improved texture. Of course, microneedling results for acne treatment vary depending on the severity of your scars. Multiple sessions may be needed if you have especially aggressive scarring.

What to Expect From Microneedling Treatment

Your microneedling journey begins with a consultation, where we assess your skin concerns and desired results. Each procedure lasts around an hour or sometimes less. This includes applying a topical numbing cream to help increase your comfort.

During microneedling treatment, we start by cleansing your skin to remove any makeup, dirt, or oil so your skin is properly prepared. Once your skin is numb, we move the microneedling device gently across the treatment site. We also apply serum to your skin to enhance the benefits of the created microchannels.

After treatment, your skin may feel slightly tender for a couple of days. During recovery, it’s important that you avoid exposure to the sun since your skin is especially sensitive and vulnerable to damage during the healing process. When you go outside, wear sunscreen and protective clothing. During the first 24 hours after microneedling treatment, you should avoid wearing makeup so your skin can heal and breathe.

Microneedling Results

You’ll likely notice immediate microneedling benefits since your skin has been refreshed and resurfaced. Other results, like a reduction in fine lines, wrinkles, and scarring, will take longer since you need to give your body time to generate new collagen and elastin. You should notice optimal results within a few weeks.

You can enhance your microneedling results by scheduling regular maintenance sessions every four to six weeks or so. By waiting this length of time, your body will have already completed its new collagen production process. Every patient’s treatment plan is different, so if you have particularly severe acne scarring, we may schedule several sessions about a month apart to continue stimulating new collagen.
