Don’t Sweat the Expired Salad Dressing

Do You ever have those moments in life that should be so insignificant and ordinary but actually turn out to be quite enlightening, reflective and maybe even a little funny?? Well I had mine while cleaning out my lovely frig. What’s more cliché than purging your refrigerator on that day of all days, that day of new beginnings and resolutions…New year’s day? I know, really Deb?

Sad but true. I was once that lady whose home was always immaculate, who always had fresh baked cookies for the neighborhood kids, who was always planning the next craft or project. All this while working full time and raising 3 daughters on my own. God forbid I have an expired bottle of salad dressing in my frig! Eww! Gross!

Guess what… not only did I have one expired bottle of salad dressing this year, I had six! The deeper my Playtex gloves dug into my frig, the funnier it got. I even called my hubby over to witness the scene of the crime! From fur covered cream cheese to items that somewhat resembled a science experiment, I proceeded to fill up and entire garbage bag of god knows what!

“I can’t believe I let this happen”! I said in shame to my hubs.

“Let what happen, Hun? What, you let a few bottles of salad dressing expire?? No big deal. The house is still standing, the world is still turning, and at the end of the day, who cares??” my handsome muttered.

At that moment a light bulb went off. He’s right. This year has been filled with moving into a new home together, moving my ailing mother in with us and handling her care, leaving a job that I absolutely adored in order to do so, finally getting married while planning our oldest daughter’s wedding, starting a new amazing part time job, packing up and moving my mother for the fifth time now that she’s healthy. All that and so much more with kids, new puppies, health issues. It’s laughable that a couple pieces of fuzzy cheese in our frig used to send me into a tailspin!

That old cliché “Don’t sweat the small stuff” rang true on my new year’s day this year. Hopefully I can remember that for the rest of the year. Happy New Year everybody!
