50 Something

I don’t know about you, but my journey through my 50s so far (I am 55 ) has been interesting, with some unsettling discoveries. When I turned 50, suddenly things started going wonky with my body. I had aches where none had been, lines and spots on my face that were never there, skin that gravity was affecting, weight that suddenly refused to go away (thank you very much menopause). Years of avoiding routine exercise now affected my joints and my stamina. What the heck! And now add Empty Nest Syndrome to add an emotional adjustment. Awesome. But here’s the thing. All these things are addressable. I realized I had to do some things for myself. It’s a time of transition, a chance for renewal.

Yes, life is changing, but I’m rediscovering myself. I needed to start eating better (and less), exercising, and sleeping better, but I also wanted to do some aesthetic things, just for me. Why? Because it makes me feel better about myself. It makes me feel more confident. I admit it – I did not take good care of my skin…ever. My generation sat out in the sun with baby oil on for goodness sake (sometimes on a foil mat!). So now I take care of my skin (it’s never too late!), I address the wrinkles with a little Dysport and zap away the sun damage. It makes me feel good. It’s that little boost I needed to stop thinking about the fact that I am getting older and my life is changing so much. So yes, life is changing but changes can be good. Change can be beautiful. It’s all part of our journey.
